The client is a Company of the situated at Chennai, is one of the major manufacturing facilities established in India through Indo-Australian cooperation
Incorporated in the year 1967, with technical and financial collaboration, commercial production in the year 1970 of Clutch Assemblies and Components to cater to automotive & tractor vehicle industry besides the After Market. Since 1980, the Flywheel Starter Ring Gear operation is started from the year 2004.
The client has been providing leading and reliable manufacturing services of Clutch Driven Plates, Clutch Cover Assemblies (Diaphragm Spring type and Conventional Coil Spring types), Flywheel Starter Ring Gears, etc. to all major models of Passenger Cars, Commercial Vehicles, Jeeps, Tractors & Fork Lift produced in the country for many years. The company enjoys a strong brand preference among leading Original Equipment Manufacturers like Ashok Leyland, TAFE, TMTL, ITL, Force Motors Ltd., John Deere and Mahindra (OEMs). Furthermore it distributions its product through distributors and dealers across India. It even exports its products to Spain, Italy JapanTurkeyMexicoU.S.A., Croatia , Serbia Sri Lanka and UK
The company has a well-equipped manufacturing plant with state-of-the-art machinery and is backed by a strong in-house design & development wing. This has enabled continuous product improvements and capability for new product development, both for domestic and overseas markets.
The Challenge: Prevention of Corrosion on Metals parts
In their range of products manufactured using low carbon steel, the use of oil-based rust preventives were used to prevent flash rust. However what they really needed was Dry Rust protection. The efforts for cleanliness does not compromise with efforts on how to prevent flash rust on low carbon steel after cleaning.
Oil based rust inhibitors, had the advantages of being excellent and all-weather rust preventive but also was not a preffered solution when the company went in for ISO 14001 systems. Eco-friendliness and easy dispensability were more important criteria now. The company was facing problems with this use as the wet surfaces were not conducive to fixing stickers indicating quality control passing. The handling wet surfaces were tricky due to slippages and damaging, and the part had to be repeatedly wiped and washed before using leading to additional costs.
The company was on the lookout for flash rust preventers that were:
- Water-based and also degreasing in nature
- Biodegradable and eco-friendly with easy disposability in ETP/ drainage or waste water lines.
- Dry to touch and prevented flash rust formation for at least 120 days from date of manufacture
- Allowed for adhering of stickers and markers of the QC dept.
The alternative considered solutions:
- Kerosene Oil for degreasing and cleaning: The kerosene solvent was an ideal replacement for use as it had the advantages of economy. The cleaning and rust inhibitive efficiency is good, however it doesnt not meet the requirements of ISO14001, ease of disposiibility and there were some concerns of allergy and itchiness when using.
- Polythene packaging: The parts were packed in plastic sheets for preventive of rust. However the wet seasons didn’t help the rust protection and transportation was l=also an issue . This had to be discarded as the eco friendliness was missing.
- Dry rust Protection Treatment- Cleaning with water based rust inhibitive / flash rust preventive solution, that leaves water and moisture impregnable surface coating.
The Final Choice: Triple 7 Mega Clean Flash Rust Protection with Dry Surface
The product tried out finally was Triple 7 Mega Clean, an water based cleaning and rust preventive solution that had the advantages as requested, but also was eco friendly and safe to store. Being an Anti flash rust compound & degreaser, the product is also environmentally sensitive and easy to dispose off. It leaves dry impregnated colorless coating to prevent rust on steel and other soft metals.
